A Lasting Power of Attorney lets you appoint someone, or more than one person, to make decisions on your behalf. It is usually used when someone is no longer able to make their own decisions, and needs to be signed long in advance of this happening.
There are 2 types:
- Health & Care: This lets you choose someone to make decisions about things like your daily routine (e.g. what to eat and what to wear), medical care, moving into a care home, refusing life sustaining treatment
- Financial: This lets you choose someone to make decisions about money and property for you. For example, paying utility bills, collecting your benefits, selling your home and generally helping you with your money.
You can choose to make one or both of these Powers and we can take your through the options available to you and the paperwork involved to make sure that you get it right.
A well drafted Lasting Power of Attorney can save you and your family an enormous amount of stress.
We can also advise you on the special considerations that need to be made if you have business interests. Please request our LPA factsheet for business clients, or telephone us for more information.
If you need support in your role as an Attorney for a family member or friend, we can guide you through what you can and can’t do – and help you keep proper records and accounts, as you are required to do.
